It's been a very successful week for George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road. In addition to its $378 million international box office, the film has continued to accumulate critical acclaim. Already voted Best Film by the International Federation of Film Critics, last night the film dominated The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA Awards) by winning eight of its 11 nominations to include Best Film and Best Director. In the US it just received top honors from the US National Board of Review, a pointer to the Oscars.
Rarely has a film so effectively combined commerce and art. The Best Film Award was presented to Miller and producer PJ Voeten by the original Mad Max from the first three movies, Australian actor and Hollywood star Mel Gibson, who was back in Australia to direct a movie.
''This is really a big deal to me, it's very special," said the producerdirector whose latest installment took 12 years to reach the screen following a series of challenges that involved several lead role cast changes (following the death of Heath Ledger), major location shifts and shooting 480 hours of footage over 135 days.
''The logistics of the shoots were gruelling especially as we were forced to move the Australian outback location to the Namibian desert three years ago due to rain and floods," said Miller.
"Surviving these was a triumph in itself so this success is an unexpected bonus.
"You just don't know what you have until it gets out there. I never expected to get the kind of response we've had. It really is a tribute to the cast and crew."
Last night the movie also scooped awards for best cinematography, editing, original music score, sound, production design and visual effects.
Fury Road takes place in a bone-dry future, where a group of women - five escaped sex slaves plus Imperator Furiosa, the battle-scarred liberator played by Oscar winner Charlize Theron - tear across the wasteland in a fume-belching, 18-wheel war rig. Max finds himself caught up in the wake of this whirlwind pursuit, while the women's former master, the slavering despot Immortan Joe, follows on with his fanatical War Boys in tow.
The original Mad Max films followed in quick succession (1979, 1981 and 1985), after which Miller, one of Australia's best directors, diversified to other genres such as Oscar-nominated Babe (1995) and Oscar-winning animated feature Happy Feet (2006). Yet over the years Miller continued to be haunted by new incarnations of Mad Max.
"I guess he refused to be buried," the director joked in an interview with the Global Times.
