WELLINGTON Jordan Phillips Color Rush Jersey , Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The New Zealand government will invest up to 35 million NZ dollars (25.6 million U.S. dollars) over seven years in Genomics Aotearoa, a new collaborative science organization supporting advanced genomics research, Science and Innovation Minister Paul Goldsmith said on Friday.
"Genomics is a fast-moving, data intensive research field that underpins a wide range of science that is increasingly important to New Zealand," Goldsmith said.
Led by the University of Otago, Genomics Aotearoa is an alliance between the Universities of Auckland and Massey, other institutes and 32 associate organizations including researchers and end users of genomics and bioinformatics.
This new collaborative platform presents a major opportunity for New Zealand to be at the forefront of genomics, Goldsmith said, adding "from health research to the primary sector and our environment, there are considerable social and economic gains on offer."
Genomics involves data-intensive computing to decode the DNA of plants, animals, and humans to understand how groups of genes interact with each other and the external environment. It is not genetic modification, which is the direct manipulation of an organism's genome, Goldsmith explained.
This investment will establish Genomics Aotearoa as a collaborative platform of genomics research that grows New Zealand's capability, builds international connections, and develops the tools and technologies that will support the country's genomics researchers in delivering excellent science, the minister said.
"The new platform will accelerate genomics research in New Zealand, and thereby speed up our understanding of diseases like Kauri dieback, how to counter pest animal species, and develop new medical treatments for diseases such as cancer," he said.

LONDON, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Scotland will be at the forefront of a growing decommissioning industry as oil and gas fields close, a major conference in Aberdeen, a port city in northeast Scotland, was told Tuesday.
The British secretary to the exchequer, Andrew Jones, said that as oil fields mature across the world there is opportunity for Britain to become pioneers in this area.
The statement came as he was a speaking at the oil and gas sector's largest conference, Offshore Europe, which kicked off Tuesday in Scotland's "oil capital" of Aberdeen.
Cleaning up and dismantling old oil rigs and pipelines must be carried out by all operators once they have finished extracting oil and gas in Britain, Jones said, added that the North Sea is one of the first regions in the world to start decommissioning on such a large scale.
Jones said that as oil fields mature across the world there is opportunity for Britain to become pioneers by developing decommissioning expertise and sell it to the world.
Ahead of the conference, Jones said, "The UK oil and gas industry supports 300,000 jobs, and with up to 20 billion barrels of oil yet to recover, has many productive years ahead."
"As the need for decommissioning grows, we must seize the opportunity to cement the UK as a world-leader in this field and export this knowledge globally."
Andy Samuel, CEO of Britain's Oil and Gas Authority (OGA), said, "Decommissioning presents great opportunities for innovation and the development of UK skills and capability."
"The UK's head start on cleaning up the North Sea means that 10 percent of old oil and gas facilities have already been removed, and in the next ten years alone, more than 100 platforms will need to be scrapped and over 1,800 oil wells plugged."
OGA forecasts that British oil and gas operators will spend almost 78 billion U.S. dollars on decommissioning between now and the 2050s.
A government spokesman said Britain has already started to see large decommissioning projects that demonstrate new ways of doing things and push technological boundaries in fields including Brent (Shell), Murchison (CNR) and the Southern North Sea (ConocoPhillips).

URUMQI, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Alataw Pass, in the center of Eurasia, receives freight trains from both ends of the continent.
More than 70 percent of China-Europe freight trains run through the pass in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The pass at the China-Kazakhstan border was once an important passage on the ancient Silk Road. Missionaries sent by King Louis IX of France passed it as early as the 13th century. One of the missionaries, William of Rubruk, wrote a long report on the prosperity of the Silk Road, which was regarded as a masterpiece of medieval geographical literature.
Following the industrial revolution and improved ocean transportation, the Alataw Pass waned in importance until emerging again as an important outpost of the Belt and Road construction.
On March 19, 2011, the first China-Europe freight train roared through the pass from t.
