The final part in our emetophobia success series is about a slightly different way of approaching treatment. The previous success stories all featured former emetophobics that had fought emetophobia because of a trigger, motivation or desire outside of themselves. This story looks at someone who found the motivation within her own personality. Like all the other articles we have focused on people breaking through the barrier and finding an emetophobia cure.

Our final story is about Debbie, who is a self confessed control freak. She is the type of person who makes a lot of lists and is always prepared for everything! She always has a spare pair of pantyhose in her bag and probably some wet wipes as well! For Debbie, the thing that triggered her decision to find treatment for her emetophobia was realizing that emetophobia was the only thing in her life that was out of control. She figured if she had control over the rest of her life, she could use the same strategies to get control over emetophobia.

This did not happen overnight. Like most emetophobics Debbie had a challenging time ahead and there were times that she thought she could never get through it. In fact, it took 5 years from the moment she remembers thinking, nope, enough is enough to when she could honest say she was emetophobia free.

Debbie approached therapy in the same way she approached any type of planning. She started the therapy and kept a close diary of what was going right and what was going wrong. One really big benefit of this was that she was looking at her treatment from more of an analytical stand point. If something was not going right with her treatment she had a list of the pros and cons and she could quickly see where the problem was. This helped her see when a certain treatment was not working for her. A lot of the time when a treatment is not working, or challenging, an emetophobic blames themselves. By keeping lists of what was going right and wrong Debbie did not fall into this trap, which removed a huge barrier for her.

Of course she did have moments when she had set backs. Around three times in the 5 year period she felt that she had kicked emetophobia and then it started coming back. She was also often scared that the “muted” emetophobia she felt when the therapy was going well would be with her forever. Although this was so much better than the 8 years before the therapy, she still was not emetophobia free, which was her goal.

From her observations during therapy she worked out pretty quickly that trying to deal with emetophobia as a giant “thing” was not helpful. Instead, it was better focusing on the symptoms of emetophobia. Slowly she managed to reduce and then remove each symptom of emetophobia from her life.

How can Debbie鈥檚 experiences help me?

Well first off, taking notes of what is working and not working for you during your treatment is a good idea. This is an effective way of knowing what the problem is if any barriers arise in your therapy. The second thing to learn from Debbie is making sure you are a part of your treatment. For example, if you have a great imagination, use visualization exercises. If you love interacting with people, create a really strong buddy system. Strengthen your therapy by making yourself part of it.
