DENVER Jonathan Toews Jersey , the United States, June 25 (Xinhua) -- How far will gasprices drop? American consumers asked this week, as some expertssaid summer prices could drop to 1990 levels.
"I just paid 1.97 dollars a gallon," said Virginia businessteacher Douglas Hubscher, who holds four advanced degrees inbusiness and economics.
Hubscher told Xinhua Friday that several factors were drivingthe oil price to the 12-year low, including increases in domesticoil shale production and renewable energies that in turn haddropped the demand for overseas oil.
Chris Kahn of Bankrate said: "we're not about to see the endof the road for cheap gasoline."
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said gas prices last droppedbelow 1.50 U.S. dollars a gallon in 1991, and were not much lowerin the early 1980s.
"During the (former President Ronald) Reagan years we had asimilar drop," Al Rickard recalled. "Gas prices dropped to belowone dollar a gallon due to fiscally tight Republican policies."
Rickard is a Washington insider and publisher who worked for theRepublican Party in the economically vibrant 1980s.
The federal Energy Information Administration (EIA) said gaswould be average 1.98 dollars per gallon throughout the year, thelowest in 12 years.
"It's all about global politics and OPEC nations producing moreto retain their market share," Rickard cautioned.
"It's also part of the annual cycle of prices ... By next Marchpeople will be wringing their hands about the gas of three-dollar agallon," he said.
But some said the reverse -- that the 1.50 dollars a gallonrange was not impossible before summer's end.
That was the cost at the pump in the early 1980s during JimmyCarter's presidency, when the cost of crude doubled due to theIranian Revolution in the 1979 Oil Crises.
Historians agreed that America's dependency on foreign oil andthe unexpected crises ruined Carter's chances to be re-electedpresident.
American President Donald Trump has made energy independence acornerstone of his agenda and increasing domestic oil productionseems to be doing just that.
Oilprice said Friday that "U.S. shale is arguably thebiggest reason why prices are floundering again."
"Production continues to rise, with output expected to jump by780,000 barrels per day this year, according to the InternationalEnergy Agency (IEA)," Oilprice said on Nasdaq.
IEA, a 43-year-old oil-monitoring group, said "ultimately, theshale rebound appears to have killed off yet another oil pricerally, the latest in a series of still-born price rebounds sincethe initial meltdown in 2014."
"Renewable energy is the way of the future and each year seesexponential increases in capturing part of the fossil fuel marketshare," said Jon Creyts, the managing director of the RockyMountain Institute (RMI).
RMI advocates energy efficiency and cost reductions through anumber of cutting edge practices and is involved in severalprojects in China.
Creyts told Xinhua that the economic benefits of renewableenergy over oil and gas are significant.
The typical American household spent about 1,120 U.S. dollarsless on gas last year than in 2014, according to the Oil PriceInformation Service.
With the peak domestic travel months ahead, consume groups suchas the American Automobile Association (AAA) predicted a recordnumber of domestic vacationers this summer.
According to GasPriceWatch, prices are lowest in the U.Sstates of South Carolina, Oklahoma, Alabama, Arkansas, andMississippi due to low state gas taxes and close proximity torefineries along the Gulf of Mexico.
It also said meteorologists were carefully watching two stormsin the Atlantic Basin, either of which had the potential to pushfuel prices higher next week.
If either of these develop into a major storm and move into theGulf of Mexico, they could threaten gas supplies coming fromrefineries along the coast, causing oil and gas prices to rise, experts said. Enditem
NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Li Na isn't fighting alone.
The fifth seed owed her historic victory to a team of talent after beating Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2 on Tuesday to become China's first semifinalist in the U.S. Open.
Li's team includes her husband Jiang Shan, former coach and sparring partner who is often given a dressing down when the player is in a bad mood, fitness trainer Alex Stober and coach Carlos Rodriguez.
Li credits Rodriguez with raising her game and saving her marriage.
"Carlos is a savior and he saved my marriage," Li said. "I don't know how things go for other women, but for me it's very difficult to find a balance between husband and coach.
"When Jiang Shan was coach, he was training me so hard, I would say, 'You're my husband. Why are you pushing me so hard?'"
Li admitted she didn't listen to her husband when he was coaching.
"When my husband was coach, I never listened. I just say, 'alright, pass, next one."
"Now when my husband wants to say something to me, he will say, 'this is what Carlos wants me to tell you.' I say, 'OK. I'll listen.'"
The world number six player is enjoying one of the best seasons in her career, reaching quarter-finals at three of the four Grand Slams, which was the first time for the 31-year-old player.
"There were some ups and downs in my previous seasons, and this year there was a lot more consistency," said Li.
Li moved in the Tuesday's match without losing a set. She had previously played against Makarova for three times, winning all of them.
Tuesday's meeting was no difference from the last three.
Li held her service games to level the first set 3-3, and managed to break in the seventh game thanks to a couple of unforced errors from the Russian. Neither player was able to break in the rest of the set, which ended 6-4 in favor of Li.
